Writer's Block

I’ve come to realize that writer’s block is not so much a block as the internal critics shackles.

I haven’t written anything substantial all year. I’ve not worked on the novel I retired to the mountains to do; I’ve not compiled the poetry manuscript that’s been on the back burner for several years – probably burnt to a crisp by now; I’ve not written any new poetry, and I’ve written very few blog posts.

A few months ago, I thought I was getting closer to the explicit act. I’d subscribed to some writerly blogs and newsletters, and was feeling the twitch. In fact, I was twitching all over.

The Write Practice gives prompts with every newsletter, and every Sunday I get the Sunday Whirl with words to create poetry. Today, another blog posted about Using Setting as a Character by Marylu Tyndale, while the prompt from The Write Practice was to write about a road trip. There’d been another about ‘not’ being balanced, and one that listed the 22 Rules of Storytelling According to Pixar. That got printed and is hanging in front of my face this very minute. The twitch had become a burning itch.

So what did I do? Nothing. That critic shackled my hands with the question, “What does any of that have to do with your novel or your poetry? If you going to write, then write what you’re supposed to be writing. If you’re going to call yourself a writer, then do it, but since you’re not doing it…”

The itch cooled quickly and the twitching has subsided.

Shall I Write

Wordle 36 - The Sunday Whirl

Leave it to me to turn the words of the season into a lament!

Shall I Write

Shall I write
Shall I heed the decree
Put forth by heart at birth
The simple directions to me

Shall I write
I’ve pondered the mystery
Of the chains which bind
And hinder the journey to me

Shall I write
Or is their fear of pending joy
Peace in the familiar
‘Fear of success’ theory employed

Shall I write
Of shepherds calling the lost
Glad tidings whispered in the darkness
The heard forgotten – at what cost

Shall I write
Or stay in the cold, straw manger
Deny angels presenting clear proof
That ease need not be a stranger

Shall I write
For me or publication
I shall, however
The ‘will’ needs motivation

Merry Christmas Wordle

It’s the time of year for the glow of ruddy faces
Mitten and snowmen and angels in wintry places
Steaming hot cocoa with floating mini marshmallows
Glitter and glamour of fine fancy mellow fellows

‘Tis the season of peace and joy, and loving nuclear families
To give and receive, stuffed stockings and shimmering trees
Cornucopia of foodstuff piled high on lace covered tables
So it says in the glossy book of the world’s favorite fables

Shudders and shivers in the blast of Frosty’s frigid breath
In parks, alleys, and doorways lies a hypothermic death
Or negative bank accounts spinning the subliminal tale
In a mad rush of the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sale

The rustle of the smug in their devilish sunshine dance
Wrapped in ermine and fur, the appointed fulcrum of chance
Regaling the gullible with continuous retelling of the story
Ring the bells, the angels sing, and nothing is untidy

Wordle #16 - White House of Hell

White House of Hell

Rusty prophets swept in last month
Foaming spittle, anticipation of the hunt
Morning rose tender with promise
And fate blew its seductive kiss
Soon the walk of talk stumbled and fell
Sun set on the white house of hell
Cement buckled and the veil shred
Torments of greed’s lusty bed
Take notes clearly dear people
Of the crawling scars in yonder steeple

The Voices Prattle - Wordle#15

The voices prattle on ceaselessly and senselessly,
regardless of scenery, blistered cement or mountain mists.
Replacing bumpin’ Chevy’s with a crickets’ ratchet or
intoxicated screams with wilderness howls did little
to silence the jangle of the juried sentence.

The image of dedicated creator, immersed in serenity
splinters into proclaimed reality of sameness.
“Wherever you are…” rattles the clichéd voice,
proving its limited dimensions. But, “If it’s not broken…”!
Success of past destruction breeds repetitive mimicry.

Ambitions vision stutters on, sprouts hardy greenery
resistant to the blathering of fear-mongering flatulence.
This delicious weed pierces the fortress of holy babble and
emerges, flowering victorious, nutritious, and fruitful.

Fallen Lotus Petals

Found through Margo's Wordgathering blog, this prompt came from The Sunday Whirl. The words in the whirl were: bold, strange, sleep, wish, devious, enchanting, alluring, inspiring, lotus, kinship, torsos, and stories. I truly loved this challenge and I hope you will also.

Fallen Lotus Petal

Skipping thru the lily pads of my mind, I gather
enchanting ideas like fallen lotus petals, and stuff
them into my pockets, my bra, tie them in my hair.
Later, at most inopportune times one will escape and
become a wish that flutters on gossamer wings, then
crashes with a harsh thud. Over the years, the wishes
have piled up into enormous heaps of strange wings,
eyes, torso’s, parts with breath that sigh and whisper
in my sleep. They are all bits and strips of me, big
and bold and powerful. The stories they tell are full
of tears and laughter, life, death, joy and hope, yet
they are devious liars. Don’t be fooled by inspiring
quips or alluring gestures. The kinship they seek is
of unknown depths with prickly, stickly rules that
entangle and trip up the skip. You may, like me, end
up flailing angels in fallen lotus petals and dreaming
of snowmen.
